ROYAL DUKES OF YORK.
Prince Andrew Duke of York |
Britain's Special Representative of International Trade & Investment 2001.
String of high-profile glamorous women.
"He is the senior Royal whose Lothario lifestyle has earned him the nickname Prince Andrew The Playboy. And over the 19 years since his divorce from Sarah Ferguson, the Duke of York has been linked to a string of high-profile glamorous women, including a former Playboy model, Courtney Love, reality TV star Caroline Stanbury and Koo Stark - who appeared in a racy film, assuring antics were never far from the headlines." (Daily Mail)
Girlfriends from diverse backgrounds.
"His girlfriends have all come from very diverse backgrounds and included 'Koo' Stark, of 'The Awakening of Emily' fame, the US actress Angie Everhart, Denise Martell, former Playboy model from LA plus PR girls Aurelia Cecil, Caroline Stanbury, a former girl friend of High Grant, the actor and Ryan Giggs, the footballer and business woman Harriet Staveley. At one point Koo was tipped to become Andrew's wife but her past caught up with her and they split after he returned from the Falklands War. She then went on to marry Tim Jefferies, grandson of Richard Tompkins, the founder of the Green Shield Stamp' Empire, before she was diagnosed in 2002 with breast cancer and sadly was forced to have a double mastectomy." (Royal Sex)
"Playboy Prince, Randy Andy, Prince of Freebies, Air Miles Andy, Junket of York, the Duke of Yob. The list of tabloid labels stuck on the Duke of York over the years is almost as long as the line of wealthy and glamorous women with whom he has been linked, both before and after his marriage to Sarah Ferguson." (The Guardian)
"Other dates have included model Gemma Curry, 22, who is now working in New York; Kirsty Richmond-January and Clio Nathaniels, both 22, who are alumnae of his Scottish boarding school, Gordonstoun; Royal Ballet dancer Karen Paisey, 21; and literary agency assistant Julia Fox, 20, who accompanied him last January to the musical Cats. Andrew had a brief fling with Michael Caine’s horsewoman daughter Nikki, 25, whom he met at a party at Langan’s, the Piccadilly restaurant co-owned by the actor. Nikki subsequently married a show rider. At his belated 21st-birthday party held in June 1981 at Windsor Castle, he dined with model Trisha Money, 23, and Lady Teresa Manners, 19, the daughter of the Duke of Rutland." (
"Things have been complicated for 'randy'Andy since the 1980s, when he was forced to ditch his first love, the actress Koo Stark, after it emerged that she had once appeared in a soft-porn film. His marriage to flame-haired Sarah Ferguson in 1986 produced two children, but also ended in tears: they announced their separation in 1992 and were divorced four years later. Since then, it's been all go: Andrew has squired at least 15 women, ranging from Ghislaine Maxwell, the daughter of dodgy tycoon Robert, to Denise Martell, a former Playboy model from Los Angeles. Other girlfriends have included the PR girls Aurelia Cecil and Caroline Stanbury, left, and the businesswoman Harriet Staveley. His current squeeze is the 36-year-old actress, Angie Everhart. Like Andrew's ex-wife, Everhart is a ginger-nut, and was invited to attend his daughter's birthday, in a semi-official capacity. Just what attracts this string of beauties to the multimillionaire prince is anyone's guess. However, one former squeeze has told friends his bedroom manner extends to modelling girlfriends' underwear by way of a joke." (Independent)
Stage actresses & dancers: "Various stage actresses and dancers were among his conquests, including Ruthie Henshall, beauty queen Carolyn Seaward (who wRowland as Miss UK 1980), and Vicki Hodge, the naughty daughter of Sir John Hodge, who starred in the 1974 film Confessions Of A Sex Maniac and later sold details of her romance with Andrew to the press." 1) Alexandra Escat.
Filipino model
Friend in 2011?.
"The Spanish-Filipina model is lissom (sic), lovely and would do well to make herself better acquainted with the intricacies of London geography, for she may be about to spend a lot more time here. The focus of much intrigue and mystery . . . she is, undeniably, a great friend of Prince Andrew. The princely association began in August last year [2010] when Alexandra, 25, and Andrew, old enough to know better, were photographed on the deck of a mutual friend's yacht off Sardinia, her cutaway one-piece glinting in the sunlight as he clasped her hand in both of his and kissed it passionately. . . ." (Standard)
Personal & family background: She grew up between Manila and Madrid, the daughter of a Filipina mother Sandra, a business graduate and Spanish father Javier, who works in import-export. 2) Amanda Staveley. (1973-?)
British businesswoman.
Lover in 2003.
Daughter of: Robert & Lynne Staveley.
Wife of: Mehrdad Ghodoussi. ar 2011.
Amanda's very special man: "Other reported girlfriends have included PR girls Aurelia Cecil and Caroline Stanbury, and the businesswoman Amanda Staveley, whom he came close to marrying. In an interview with the Financial Times, Stavely refused to confirm or deny that she had 'turned her back' on a marriage proposal, saying only that Andrew was a 'very considerate boyfriend' and a 'very special man." (The Daily Beast)
He called Amanda 'darling':s "Since his divorce, Andrew's most serious romance has been with Amanda Staveley. Andrew invited her to Buckingham Palace and Balmoral, the royal estate in Scotland. He called her 'darling,' and she called him 'babe.' 'He all but got down on bended knee to ask Amanda to marry him,' Richard Kay, the Daily Mail's veteran royal writer, told me. 'He clicked with Amanda. She's a feisty girl, a strawberry blonde, and an extrovert. Andrew's fascinated by money, and Amanda's got plenty of that. She sounded out a lot of people, including me, about what life would be like as a member of the royal family, and she came as close as possible to saying yes. But to become the Duchess of York she'd have had to put herself in the background and give up her career, and she didn't want to do that.'" (Vanity Fair)

The "financial fixer": "Entrepreneur Staveley was known as a 'financial fixer' to Middle Eastern royalty. She met the Duke of York in Jordan in 2003 while he was visiting as trade ambassador for Britain. She is said to have turned down his marriage proposal two years later. She now lives in Dubai." (MSN)
First encounter: "Prince Andrew has also been linked to businesswoman Amanda Staveley, a one-time beauty model and student at Cambridge University. In 2001, Prince Andrew, as UK trade ambassador, visited the science park with King Abdullah of Jordan on a fact-finding mission. In the VIP meet-and-greet line-up was Amanda, whose good looks did not go unnoticed by the Prince. 'Their relationship blossomed quickly. She became a regular visitor to Buckingham Palace, Sandringham and Royal Lodge. Andrew's home in Windsor Great Park, which she helped him decorate. She was even introduced to Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, who were said to have approved of her. In 2003, the Prince, who was said to be besotted by her, popped the question. But Amanda struggled to envisage herself idling away her hours with official duties and being unable to speak her mind. 'Andrew's a lovely man and I still care for him a great deal,' she told the Daily Mail. 'But if I'd married him, my independence would have disappeared.'" (Daily Mail)
Amanda's key encounters: "Her success was to lead to two key encounters that helped propel her from successful entrepreneur into the ranks of the super-rich. First, Abu Dhabi officials took an interest in her business and invited her to the Middle East to discuss her knowledge of Silicon Fen businesses. 'I flew to the United Arab Emirates, and as I looked out at the desert, I just felt that this place was going to be important to me,' she said. Then, in 2001, Prince Andrew, as UK trade ambassador, visited the science park with King Abdullah of Jordan on a fact-finding mission. In the VIP meet-and-greet line-up was Amanda, whose good looks did not go unnoticed by the Prince. Amanda had just ended a tempestuous two-year relationship with millionaire venture capitalist Mark Horrocks, 39, and was touched by the Prince's compliments. Their relationship blossomed quickly and was mutually beneficial in many ways. As trade envoy, Andrew could open doors to the contacts she craved. Meanwhile, he enjoyed introducing people to his new ' female friend', whose glamour was equalled by her charm and intelligence---an enviable asset for Andrew, who is often considered socially rather gauche. Friends noted how she called him 'Babe', and he sent her racy jokes in text messages and emails during his travels around the world. She became a regular visitor to Buckingham Palace, Sandringham and Royal Lodge, Andrew's home in Windsor Great Park, which she helped him decorate. She was even introduced to Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, who were said to have approved of her. In 2003, the Prince, who was said to be besotted by her, popped the question. But Amanda struggled to envisage herself idling away her hours with official duties and being unable to speak her mind. 'Andrew's a lovely man and I still care for him a great deal,' she told this newspaper a few years ago. 'But if I'd married him, my independence would have disappeared.' It was a decision that disappointed her parents, particularly her mother, who Amanda later said took three years to get over it." (Daily Mail)
'But if I'd married him, all my independence would have disappeared.': "Five years ago, the Prince was besotted with Amanda and desperate to marry her. In the two years he had known her, she had also become a Royal Family favourite. Prince Philip adored her company and let it be known in the family that he considered her to be 'an ideal choice' as the next Duchess of York. In the Yorkshire village of North Stainley near Ripon, Amanda's mother, Lynne, a former champion horsewoman, and her landowning husband, Robert, shared the Queen and Prince Philip's enthusiasm for the union. Everyone wanted it -- only Amanda was not so sure, though she didn't dismiss his proposal out of hand. With typical thoroughness she researched the role, asking someone close to the Royal Family what her life would be like as a royal duchess and the Queen's daughter-in-law. What she heard about the restrictions and the lack of freedom of such a life, for all its privileges, was not for her. 'Andrew's a lovely man and I still care for him a great deal,' says Amanda. 'But if I'd married him, all my independence would have disappeared.'" (Daily Mail)
Amanda's personal & family background: "Standing 6ft in her high heels, Amanda is as glamorous as she is charming. The daughter of Robert, a wealthy landowner, and Lynne, a former champion horsewoman, her family's wealth dates back to the 16th century when Henry VIII's one-time favourite, Cardinal Wolsey, granted them a plot of land at North Stainley in North Yorkshire." "He was also famously suspected of enjoying a liaison with the statuesque 5ft 10in redhead, Angie Everhart. She has been perhaps the most significant woman in his life since his divorce in 1996 and was even talked of as a future Duchess of York. It's believed they first met in 2003, and the last time they were seen together was in the summer of 2008 when she was photographed in his green Aston Martin. When asked by the Mail On Line Sunday in 2009 about the Prince's public image, she said: 'I don't know why you British give him such a hard time. He works harder than anyone I know. He flies all over the world. He takes a few weeks of the year off and he's given so much c**p. Why are people mean about him just because he likes to be with pretty people in nice places? Sure, he likes to hang out with pretty girls. What do you want him to do? Do you want him to go to Los Angeles and sit with a dog? Every person on the planet likes to be surrounded by pretty people. It's natural. Wouldn't you rather sit with someone who is good-looking than someone who is not? Andrew has never had a drink in his life -- he told me he had a sip of Champagne when he was 16 -- and he has never done drugs. He is so well-behaved. I don't understand why he gets so much abuse. He's a great guy and a great father. I find self-confidence and good manners sexy in a man and Andrew has both'." (Daily Mail

Like his other old flames, Heather -- who has been to Andrew's Sunninghill home in Berks -- yesterday tried to play down their relationship. But she admitted being with the prince at Balmoral last month when Fergie's mother Susan Barrantes died in a car crash. Arriving at work yesterday morning she insisted: 'That was the last time I saw him. There is no relationship. We are just friends who have met on a few social occasions. There is no more to it.'" Carolyn had enjoyed the dashing prince as her constant escort for many months. Those candlelit dinners Andrew ? on his rooms had been the prelude? to many happy evenings for them. But the then 20-year-old Andrew had met Gemma Curry, a beauty about to become a popular model, while taking flying lessons from her RAF wing commander father. Gemma, in turn, forgot the old adage 'never introduce your donna to a pal'. She had Andrew meet her cousin, Kim Deas, and soon found herself joining Carolyn in retirement." 23) Ghislaine Maxwell.
"However, after the divorce, Prince Andrew was linked to a number of high-profile glamorous women. One of these is Ghislaine Maxwell, the daughter of disgraced newspaper tycoon Robert, who now stands accused of procuring young girls for the sexual gratification of Jeffrey Epstein and his friends. Court documents claim that she 'facilitated Prince Andrew's acts of sexual abuse by acting as a madam for Epstein.' She was described in the court papers as a 'primary co-conspirator in Epstein's sexual abuse and sex trafficking scheme'. Maxwell, 53, was educated at Marlborough College and Oxford University. In 2000, Maxwell and Epstein were seen on holiday with Prince Andrew at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Florida. that same year, she took the prince to a 'hookers and pimps' themed party in New York, which was hosted by the former lingerie model Heidi Klum. However, Maxwell had previously made clear she was not connected to the criminal proceedings against Epstein and said that his crimes were committed long before she had dealings with him." Andrew's most notable fling.
"His most notable fling was in 1982 with the American actress Kathleen 'Koo' Stark, who appeared in sexually explicit films early in her career. At one stage in their relationship, Andrew was forced to cut short a vacation with Miss Stark on the Caribbean island of Mustique in the face of a torrent of steamy publicity back home, including film footage on television from one of her erotic films." The lady who tamed the bachelor prince.
The lady who tamed the bachelor prince.
"Hunky Prince Andrew was dubbed 'Randy Andy' for his flings with a string of beauties, including model, an actress and a baronet's daughter. His appetite for the opposite sex was legendary as a young man but there was only one beauty who really managed to tame the bachelor Prince Charming. She was the most famous of all the women Prince Andrew loved - Koo Stark. They met through a friend of an old Gordonstoun pal. The prince was 'crazy' about Koo, then 25, according to friends. He even introduced the then actress and now society photographer to his family and the relationship blossomed. But his two-year romance with Koo Stark shocked the world and the Queen. Ultimately it was doomed because of that. The young lovers jetted from one Caribbean hideaway to another. When the daring pilot, Andy, then 32, went to fight in the Falklands, they kept in close touch. He had pictures of Koo pinned to his locker door and they wrote to each other regularly. But eventually the pair, who shared a love of photography, split after pressure from the Palace. It was claimed the royals frowned upon her reputation as a soft-pron actress. She had appeared in a film called The Awakening of Emily, which featured a lesbian scene in the shower. . . ." (The Free Library)

The handsome warrior prince & the porn star.
"Until the Epstein scandal, Prince Andrew’s sex life hasn’t been such big news since he dated Koo Stark in the 1980’s. Back then, he was the handsome warrior prince freshly returned from the Falklands War who had jokingly greeted his mother, the Queen, with a red rose clasped between his teeth on the dockside. The relationship with Koo didn’t last—courtiers disapproved and the final straw came when a mildly pornographic film with a lesbian shower scene called Emily in which she had participated surfaced—but Andrew went on to date some of the finest posh totty in the land throughout the 1980s." Miss Hodge is said to be asking between $A70,000 and $A100,000 for the photographs. Reports from Barbados say Miss Hodge has been boasting that she urged the couple to frolic on the beach so that she could secretly take her pictures. Tracie Lamb's mother, Mrs. Dorothy Ingrams, said last night she would fly out to Barbados early this week to bring Tracie home. According to the mass circulation 'News of the World', the photographs of the kiss-and-cuddle with Tracie may not be the one ones on sale. The world was stunned when Vicki later revealed that she had an AIDS fear. Her former lover, gangster John Bindon, had just died. His friends were saying that it was cancer but Miss Hodge, who had an eight-day fling with Prince Andrew in 1983 while he was on the rebound from Koo, publicly expressed the fear that AIDS could have been the real cause. Duke of York's marital prospects.
" . . . Marriage to a rich heiress would perhaps be a solution and it seems tht he was very fond of two aristocratic British ladies, Lady Tyrconnell and Mary, Duchess of Rutland, a famous beauty. According to one courtier, York had strong feelings for Lady Tyrconnell and 'absolutely turned the Duchess of Gordon out of the supper-room destined for the royal family at the Pantheon, because her Grace was supposed to have said something ill-natured aboug the object of her affection'. This affair was common knowledge and the subject of an explicit caricature by James Gillray which showed a strapping young prince getting into bed with Lady Tyrconnell while her husband quickly left the room. It was unfortunate that Lady Tyrconnell was married but the Duchess of Rutland, a very rich widow, was not. However, she was romantically entangled with a friend of the Prince of Wales, who persuaded his brother to look elsewhere." (Celebrities of London and Paris)

Sarah Hussey Delaval, Countess of Tyrconnel (1763-1800)
Lover in 1788-1789.
Wife of: George Carpenter, 2nd Earl of Tyrconnel, mar 1780.
" . . . Lady Tyrconnel was her father's favourite daughter, and after Lady Delaval's death in 1783, she and her husband mostly resided with him, so that they were frequently at Doddington' 'dear old Doddy,' as Lady Tyrconnel, calls it in her letters, and Lord Tyrconnel's horses and dogs were constantly kept here. As scandal had connected the name of her aunt, Ann Hussey Delaval, Lady Stanhope, with that of Edward Augustus, Duke of York, brother to George III, so that name of Sarah Hussey Delaval, Countess of Tyrconnel, became connected with that of his nephew, Frederick, Duke of York, son of George III. Sir Nathaniel Wraxall, in his somewhat spiteful Posthumous Memoirs, thus speaks of it: 'The Duke of York was at this time, 1788, strongly attached to a lady of my particular acquaintance, the Countess of Tyrconnel. She was Lord Delaval's youngest daughter; feminine and delicate in her figure, with a profusion of light hair, in the tresses of which, like 'tangles of Neaera's hair' in Lycidas, his Royal Highness was detained captive. Lord Tyrconnel himself had been early married to a sister of the Duke of Rutland, from whom he obtained a divorce leas than 5 years. Not discouraged by so unfortunate matrimonial outset, he soon ventured a second time on the same perilous experiment, though, though as many persons thought, not with better success. His fortune by no means equaling his rang, Lord Delaval extended his paternal care over his daughter and her lord. In Hanover Square during the winter, as at Claremont in Surrey during summer, the two families formed only one household. The Duke of York was a constant visitor at each place, notwithstanding that Lady Tyrconnel's father and husband were both firmly attached to the Administration. Lord Delaval had received his British Peerage only two years before Pitt; and the Earl of Tyrconnel who sat in the House of Commons for Scarborough, was elected by the Rutland interest for that borough." (History of the Manor and Township of Doddington: 158)
"Sarah picked up where the former Lady Tyrconnel left off. She quickly got bored with her older husband and went out partying and man-scouting. She seemed to have hit the jackpot in 1788 when she began an affair with Prince Frederick, Duke of York. As with just about all royal affairs, the press had a field day, boosting Sarah up to celebrity status. The strangest aspect of the whole affair: both Sarah's father and husband were blooming with pride. When Frederick broke off the affair a year later, the two men were more upset than Sarah. It sounds like something out of The Tudors, no?" (The Duchess of Devonshire's)
" . . . Having provided the earl with two children, the young Countess of Tyrconnel had been indulged by her accommodating husband and encouraged by her doting father to conduct an affair with Frederick, Duke of York. Lord Delaval had even bought his daughter Claremont House near the Duke's home at Weybridge so that the Tyrconnels could love hand in glove with the prince's household." (Wedlock: The True Story of the Disastrous Marriage and Remarkable Divorce of Mary Eleanor Bowes, Countess of Strathmore: 310)
About George, 2nd Earl of Tyrconnel.
"On 3 June, 1780,the youngest daughter, Sarah Hussey Delaval, then 16's was married . . . to George Carpenter, second Earl of Tyrconnel. He is said to have been the handsomest man of his time, while she is spoken of as 'the wild and beautiful Countess of Tyrconnel', and as 'the lovely Lady Tyrconnel, who had hair of such luxuriance that when she rode it floated upon the saddle.' 'An arch and most lovely creature she must have been,' is Wm. Howitt's remark on her portrait now at Ford Castle. The honeymoon was spent at Randalls, near Leatherhead, Surrey. . ." The matter revolved around the Duke's mistress, Mary Anne Clarke, who was said to have acted as the go-between, taking money from those who sought the Duke's favours. Mrs. Clarke, the wife of a bankrupt stonemason, was thirty-three in 1809. By all accounts pretty and vivacious, she had become the Duke's mistress in 1802, when he settled L1000 a year on her. Her favours do not appear to have confined to York, and there seems little doubt that she did take bribes against promises to influence her lover. First encounter: "Among the officers at Chatham there happened to be a young ensign, extremely good-looking, upon whom Kate's beauty made a strong impression; he succeeded in captivating the affections of the charming and innocent girl, and at last seduced her. (Celebrities of London and Paris)
End of affair & aftermath: "In the gossiping pages of Captain Gronow we hear of names now having no meaning, but full of the gay world in which Viscount Palmerston shone. There was the beautiful soldier's daughter, Kate North, who, in her poverty and despair, had accepted the protection of the Duke of York. One summer morning a friend of the duke's called upon her, and told her that his royal highness would be under the necessity of giving up his connexion with her' for he had promised the king, his father, that if his debts were paid, he would never more see the object of his affection. Poor Kate's heart was full; she could not reply to the messenger; but, bursting into tears, hid her face, and flew out of the room. The sting which had been inflicted was more than she could bear, and she was seized with brain fever; but, with much care and quiet, in course of time, the poor creature recovered . . ." (The Life and Times of Viscount Palmerston, Volume 2: 482)
"The risk was felt to attend all classes; it was not only the common streetwalker of St. Giles who was a carrier. The demi-rep, 'under the protection' of some noble or even royal personage was not immune; witness the story of lovely Kate North. It is especially interesting because it is told by Captain Gronow, a contemporary of Shelley at Eton and, like Hogg, a Regency survivor. The story illustrates both the Victorian love of reading about the wicked ways of their predecessors (Gronow's memoirs were very popular) and the kind of euphemistic language which rendered a racy tale acceptable to the readership on the 1860s. Into Kate's room came the Duke of York, 'one of the finest men England could boast of . . . his brow was full and prominent, the eye greyish, beaming with benevolence; and a noble forehead, with premature grey hairs, though the Prince was hardly in the vale of years.' (Shelley called him 'mud from a muddy spring'.) 'The Duke was made happy', but the King, his father, eventually ordered him to renounce her. 'Poor Kate's heart was full . . . the sting which had been inflicted was more than she could bear and she was seized with brain fever.' She recovered, resumed her career and became 'the most admired woman in London'. But 'the canker in Kate's mind was all this while corroding her life. She visited Paris for change of air and scene, but there her senses left her; she became raving mad and died in a foreign land without a friend to close her eyes.' Gronow allows the naive to suppose that she had died of a broken heart; men of the world of his generation would perceive his insinuation that she died of an occupational disease, the 'unnecessary' detail about the Duke's premature grey hair clinching the matter." Daughter of: Frederick Howard, 5th Earl of Carlisle & Margaret Caroline Leveson-Gower
Wife of: John Henry Manners, 5th Duke of Rutland.
Character.
"A contemporary view sheds light on Elizabeth's character. She was a friend of Mrs. Arbuthnot, mistress of the Duke of Wellington, who frequently visited Belvoir. She said Elizabeth had 'extraordinary genius' as well as 'vanity and folly'. According to her, the 'fine ladies' of London did not like her because she was 'far above them'. Perhaps as a result she had few female friends but she was a constant friend to those she had. However, if women did not like her very much, she had no such problem with men, to whom she was very attractive. Although she and the Duke clearly enjoyed at least a degree of intimacy from the number of children they had, he left her along for long periods. An early admirer of Elizabeth was Beau Brummel, the society dandy. Later she developed a close and, today's Duchess considers, probably scandalous relationship with His Royal Highness Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, second son of George III." (Duchesses: Living in 21st Century)
" . . . Later, she developed a close and, today's Duchess considers, probably scandalous relationship with His Royal Highness Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, second son of George III. Frederick had been married in 1791 to his cousin Princess Frederica Charlotte, daughter of the King of Prussia, but it was not a happy married, and the couple soon separated. If Elizabeth and Frederick were indeed lovers, she could not have hoped for one of much higher status, for when his elder brother, the Prince Regent, became George IV in 1820, Frederick became heir to the throne. . . Where Elizabeth and Frederick first met is not certain but he certainly shared with her husband a passion for horse racing. John turned his estate at Cheveley Part into a thoroughbred centre of note, breeding four Classic winners; in the 21st century it is still regarded as one of the most successful stud farms in Europe. Of the racehorses owned by Prince Frederick, two won the Derby. Even if Elizabeth did not have the time to attend any races, she is likely to have organised and hosted lavish after-race-parties, when she would have had the opportunity to be familiar with the Prince." Friederike Charlotte, Duchess of York by Joseph Darbes, 18th c. |
Strongest claim to Beau Brummell's love.
"The woman whose friendship endured the longest, and who has the strongest claim to have been the love of Brummell's life, was a royal duchess: Princess Frederica Charlotte Ulrica Catherine, Princess Royal of Prussia and Duchess of York and Albany. She was twelve years his senior. Princess Frederica had grown up in the court of King William II of Prussia, spoke English with a strong German accent and corresponded invariably in French, signing herself 'Frederique.' Brummel wrote back in English. She and Brummell first met in 1800 through her husband, the Prince of Wales's bluff brother Frederick, Duke of York and Albany. The royal couple were already nearly a decade into their childless marriage and nearly as long into an informal though amicable separation. The duke lived in London at his house in Piccadilly, later converted into apartments and named after his second title, Albany, or he lived with his regiments. The duchess occupied Oatlands Park, near Weybridge in Surrey. The Yorks had bought Oatlands on their marriage in 1791 with the impressive allowances of 18,000 pounds from the Civil List, 7,000 pounds from Ireland and full 45,000 pounds a year from the duke's holdings as Prince-Bishop of Osnabruck. Prince Fred visited 'Princess Fred' at weekends, but kept a mistress, Mrs. Clarke, in town." (Beau Brummell: The Ultimate Man of Style)

"But his closest lady friend was Frederica, Duchess of York. He loved her unstructured house parties at Oatlands and shared her love of animals. He gave her a dog, Fidélité; she sent him gifts in exile, including a comfy chair. One of the few items in Brummell’s possession at his death was a miniature of Princess Frederica’s left eye. This suggests a level of intimacy that can only be guessed at. Brummell claimed it was out of respect for promises to the Princess that he refused to publish his memoirs even when he was desperate for money." (Regency History)

"Lady Stanhope was Anne Hussey Delaval, born 2 December, 1737. She was scarcely 22 when she msrried, 6 October, 1759, the Hon. Sir William Stanhope, K.B., who was aged 57. In November 1759, Horace Walpole writes, 'I have seen the new Lady Stanhope; I assure you her face will introduce no plebeian charms into the faces of the Stanhopes. But in the Stanhope family itself the marriage caused some dismay, which is expressed in their letters recently published by the late Earl of Carnarvon. . . ." " . . . [T]he interestingly named William Anne (1732-1799) succeeded him as 4th Earl in January 1743. He married firstly Frances Hanbury-Williams, the daughter of Charles Hanbury-Williams (1709-1757) of Coldbroke, Monmouthshire, and Lady Frances Coningsby (1707-1782) of Hampton Court, Herefordshire. This marriage was to bring Hampton Court in Herefordshire (still standing) into the family, for which the future 5th Earl would add Coningsby to the family name. Frances, it seems, was having an affair with Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (1739-1767). The Prince was the second son of Frederick Lewis, Prince of Wales (1707-1751), and his wife, Augusta (1719-1772), and his brother was the future George III. In January 1757, the Prince entered society and was frequently seen at Ranelagh and other assemblies with Frances. She was assumed to be his mistress and was dubbed by Horace Walpole 'Princess Edward'. Frances died in 1759, but her demise does not seem to have overly held the prince back. Walpole reported in May 1759 that Prince Frederick William, Edward's youngest brother , identified the courtesan Kitty Fisher as the seller of 'a sort [of oranges] that my brother Edward buys'. There were frequent rumours of Edward's involvement in sexual intrigues." (The Earls of Essex: A Tale of Noble Misfortune)
