Jane Roberts Duchess of St. Albans @Wikipedia |
Husband of Jane Roberts (1731-1778), mar 1752, daughter of Sir Walter Roberts, 6th Baronet of Glassenbury & Elizabeth Slaughter
" . . . In 1752, for example, Jane Roberts from Glassenbury, Kent, an only surviving child and orphan whose father's death when she was 14 had left her a very wealthy heiress, ignored the warnings of her guardians and married the feckless George, 3rd Duke of St. Albans. Quickly ensuring control over his new Duchess's estates, George was delighted that her fortune enabled him to pay off some of his many debtors. Unfortunately, Jane is said to have suffered from George's cruelty and lack of feeling towards her, and, in 1755, they formally separated after just two and a half years of marriage. Forced twice to flee abroad to escape debtors, he ran off to Paris with a Windsor dairymaid, had a son by her (who died), enjoyed other mistresses and was imprisoned in debtors' gaol." After his wild time in Europe, mostly involving women and gambling, the Duke and Duchess had a brief reconciliation in 1760. She joined him in Brussels but she was not prepared to vie for attention with his mistress, Marie Petit, by whom he had several children; he and Hane had none. Jane died in 1778. Although her Kentish estate, Glassenbury Park, could have passed to George, and might have remained in the family today, their separation changed that." (Duchesses: Living in 21st Century Britain)

"Following Harriot's death, the Duke, after fathering an illegitimate daughter by a servant girl, married an Irishwoman whose dowry helped reduce the mortgage on Redbourne. They had one son who became 10th Duke on William's death in his forties, in 1849. . . ." (Duchesses)
